Why should I join Local 70 or maintain my membership?

There are a couple of strong reasons to be a member in Local 70. First ask yourself is there anything in my contract I benefit from? If yes, you risk losing any gains you contractually have. More than 90% of dues goes directly to the defense of your contract or to negotiate benefits for you in it. Without these financial resources we may not be able to continue to represent your contract. If you don’t think you have anything to lose, talk to your steward, they can talk to you about what management wants to take away every time the contract opens.

Strength in numbers, some of our contracts with the best benefits, have the highest membership rates, don’t think management doesn’t look at those numbers to decide how seriously to take our proposals during negotiations. If they see a unit with low membership it is easy to not take our concerns serious.

Lastly, and the most often forgotten, are resources for defense against unjustified or excessive discipline. No one ever thinks they will be the one to get called into HR, but if that day comes you will appreciate the availability of your Steward and/or Business Agent to be there with you and defend you and assist you through the process.
